Howell Care Center -Tar River is a non-profit,
residential facility that houses thirty children
that are medically fragile. They require 24/7
nursing and respiratory care due to many of our
children having trachs, g-tubes and ventilators.
These children range in ages from birth to 15
years old and all have both a physical and
cognitive disability. At the facility, we take
care of all of their medical, nutritional, and
educational needs. The children attend "school"
on campus to help reach their maximum potential.
With limited funding, purchasing any
type of specialized equipment is impossible for
us to do alone. Every year we hold various
fundraising events to purchase supplies and
teaching materials. Recently, we've been trying
to fundraise for Smart boards for our
classrooms. These boards are interactive
displays that are connected to a computer.
Our
students can greatly benefit from having such a
device to access their intended curriculum.
Their learning would be more visual and they
would have much more of a "hands on" approach to
learning. The interactive lesson would hold
their attention better and, since they enjoy
participating, they would be more likely to
retain any newly learned skills.
